If there is only a small difference between what you believe and what they believe(and it's so arbitrary), then it should be easy for them to move over to your opinion once you convince them that they are wrong.
They have to be wrong because if they are right then you are wrong and it's hard to work under the assumption that you might be wrong. Thus, they must be wrong.

After a simple failed attempt at convincing this similar person that they are wrong, you realise that since this person is so similar to you and yet believes something different then they must be faulty, an idiot or mentally ill etc.

In WOW, it's just for fun. Back when the behavioural tendency was developed, it was real. That rage is all about fear of losing out, 'cause losing out could've meant death for you and your family.

Ever notice how much angrier posts by language A users are in a thread about a feature in Language B that language A doesn't have? If it's just doing it one way versus another, they'll argue. If it's about something that only one language can do, it'll explode into apoplectic rage. It's the "what if I'm wrong?" reaction - What if the lack of feature X means I have failed? What if feature X is irrelevant, and I've chosen a language that values pointless crap? Boom!
